Beginning Sunday,
August 21, we will offer Sunday School for children entering
Kindergarten through 5th grade. But wait, not just your
traditional Sunday School, but PowerXpress!
Imagine a Sunday school classroom
where children examine Van Gogh's Starrry Night and paint
their own version while discussing God's promise to Abram when God
said, "Look at the sky and try to count the stars; you will
have as many descendents as that." (Genesis 15:5, Good
News)
Or enter a room where children are
playing the "Laughing Game." when the giggles wind down,
the teacher begins a discussion about laughter. He reminds the
children how elderly Abraham and Sarah laughed when God told them
they would have a baby, and asks if they know the meaning of the
baby's name, Isaac. When the children hear that Isaac means
"laughter," the giggles begin again.
And can you imagine visiting the church
kitchen for Sunday school class? That's where some children
are assembling a fruit salad while others are frying
tortillas. They tell you they are making the kinds of food
that might have been served when Abraham held a feast when Isaac was
weaned (Genesis 21:8). They invite you to come back in a few
minutes and eat with them.
Who is making these Bible stories come
to life? Adults who use their specialized skills in art,
cooking, science, drama, and games to engage the children in Bible for
life!
The children will meet every Sunday
morning from 9:45 - 10:45 am. We will begin with a snack,
(on case you had to run out the door without breakfast).
Promptly at 10 am, the children will be engaged in our story for the
week. The children will be finished at 10:45 am so their parents
can pick them up in time for church at 11 am.
In addition we will resume our
Children's Chapel during the 11am service. This year we will
serve 3 year olds through 2nd grade. The chapel will have a new
look too! The children will use a worship style based on the
Liturgy of the Word found in the book of Common Prayer. The
worship is geared for their level of understanding. They will
follow the cross out at the beginning of our worship service and
return in time to participate with their family a communion.
We are very excited about the new
programming for the fall. The new programs offer an opportunity
for us to involve more people in your children's lives, Please
be open to receiving a call from one of the committee members, Sallie
Geneva, Michelle Markert, Sally Buck, and Molly Wandel, to perhaps
serve once a month in some capacity. If you would like to know
more or be interested in helping with either of these programs, please
contact Jill Johnson at jill@stmarkscc.com
